Casablanca. December 1941
The flotsam and jetsam of Europe has been washed up on the North African coast by the tides of war. Morocco is nominally neutral under the control of the Vichy French, but they are overseen by the German representatives. Agents from European and other powers congregate in Casablanca, where they are joined by refugees, displaced tourists and underworld figures eager to take advantage of the chaos. Anything you want can be found in Casablanca, either in the Casbah or Rick Blaine’s (in)famous Café Americain. The Casbah is no place for the unwary, but everybody comes to Rick’s.
Cafe Casablanca was last run in the UK in 2014, and we present it now in an updated form. The setting is historical although it owes as much to the classic Hollywood films depicting the era as it does to strict period authenticity. As such, all characters will present and be seen by the world around them as either male or female. Having said that, all players will be able to request either a male or female presenting character, and are free to consider and are also able to play their character as having a gender identity that differs from their surface presentation.
It’s 1941 and World War II is underway. There will be many nationalities represented including German, Italian, British, American, French, Norwegian, Corsican, Belgian, Dutch Moroccan and Japanese. There will be representation of different religions within the game. Historical symbolism will not be permitted within the game; we will instead use colours and similar shapes to identify the Axis powers. Historical attitudes to other nations, jingoism, discrimination, gender roles, attitudes to perceived or actual cowardice will be explored. If you wish to discuss these themes and whether you should play then please reach out to the GM team at: casablanca-gms@ishtari.co.uk
